Consider these questions before purchasing your next bottle of mouthwash

Updated:

In addition to brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing at night and scheduling regular checkups with your Raleigh dentist, you may have been told that you should rinse your mouth with a mouthwash. However, with so many products that are available, knowing which cleanser to pick can seem a bit overwhelming.

Each mouthwash serves a different purpose. There are those that make your breath smell minty fresh, others prevent cavities and some eliminate plaque accumulation. When selecting the mouthwash that is right for you, it’s important to take the following questions into consideration:

1) Who are you buying it for?
Many rinses contain alcohol and this ingredient can be dangerous if a lot of it is accidentally ingested. If you have small children that are going to be using the mouthwash, those that have no alcohol may be your best option. Recovering alcoholics also may benefit from cleansers that don’t include this potent substance.

2) Do you have sensitive gums?
You may notice that after a dental procedure, your gums are a bit sore. If you haven’t had any treatment, but naturally have sensitive teeth, stick to mouthwashes that have calming ingredients in them. Many rinses exist that have soothing additives in them like chamomile or aloe vera.

3) Are you prone to plaque buildup?
One of your best bets if you are someone that tends to have more plaque around your pearly whites is a mouthwash that is made with anti-plaque ingredients. Not only will these help fight nasty cavities, but they also will help get right of bacteria that can cause halitosis, known commonly as bad breath.
