A good oral care regime is especially important as you get older

Updated:

Any Raleigh dentist will tell you that it's important to have a good oral hygiene regime, and at no time is this more true than as you age. Each year, your gums are not only likely to get more sensitive, but your teeth are working harder to prevent erosion.

But that's not all. The American Dental Association (ADA) says that the nerves in your pearly whites become less sensitive as you get older. Although this may sound like a good thing (after all, no one likes to feel a stinging sensation when drinking ice water), it is anything but.

In fact, as you age, decreased responsiveness to pain may lead you to think that don't that your teeth are in tip-top shape when this may not be the case. It is crucial that you schedule regular checkups with a trusted dentist like Dr. Thomas Cooke.

In addition to visiting an oral care professional, you should know that the ADA says there are some things you can do at home to make sure your gums and teeth stay healthy such as:

1) Brush your teeth two times a day using soft bristles. Purchasing an an electronic toothbrush is also a good idea.

2) Floss once a day.

3) Should you have dentures, keep in mind that cleaning them every day is recommended. They should also be taken out at night.

4) Drink tap water as this thirst-quenching beverage contains fluoride unlike anything you'll find in a bottle.

5) If you smoke, do your best to quit. Of course, you know that this bad habit can cause lung and heart disease, but it can also increase the chances of ruining your mouth. Each time you light up, you putting yourself at risk for tooth loss and gum disease.
